Manitoba Youth Job Centres (MYJCs) opened up for the 2012 summer season last week.

The centres provide students and youth ages 12-29 with free information and education on career development and employment-related skills such as labour regulations, workplace health and safety matters, resume preparation, interview assistance, and job-search techniques.

The MYJCs also provide a free employment referral service for local employers, matching qualified, enthusiastic student and youth workers to summer employment opportunities.

The Altona MYJC office will be managed by Kathryn Knutt.

Knutt recently completed her first year at Assiniboine Community College, where she is training in medical administration.

?I grew up on a farm near Emerson, moved to Gretna in high school, and graduated from W.C. Miller last year, so I already know a lot of the youth who may be coming to my office this summer,? she says.

While in Miller, Knutt was part of the Champions program, which mentors youth in making the right choices.

?I think that experience will definitely be an asset in this position,? she says. ?I love to connect with youth and I can?t wait to help them find a job that?s a good fit for them.?

Knutt?s services will include coaching youth in interview skills, as well completing job-winning resumes and cover letters.

?I can help you with all of that,? she says.

?The way it works is that a business will put in an order for a certain position they want filled,? Knutt explains.

?My job is to refer people to them. We don?t do the hiring or line up the interviews. The employer does that. I act as kind of a middle man, bridging the gap between the student and the employer.?

Knutt says MYJCs play an important role. ?There are so many people who don?t have the job experience or the confidence to go out there and find a way to earn money,? she says. ?What I do is make that experience a little easier.?

She especially loves the Odd Job Squad, which connects kids aged 12-16 with short term jobs, such as working at special events over the summer.

?This gives them that experience they need, and also gives them a little spending money for the summer,? she says.

?I?m still learning the ropes, but already have a few ideas, like running a car wash or hosting barbecues.?

She says the Flower Frenzy and the dunk tank at the Sunflower Festival are also events she would like to host this year.

MYJCs are operated by the Province of Manitoba in cooperation with community-based Sponsoring Committees in 32 rural locations throughout the Province.

Additionally, the Province of Manitoba partners with Service Canada to operate 11 Service Canada Centres for Youth (SCCY) in urban centres in Manitoba.

MYJC offices are open May through August each year. In Altona, the MYJC is located in the Altona & District Chamber of Commerce office in the mall.

Office hours are Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

?If you want a job for the summer, this is definitely the place to go for help,? Knutt says. ?Just walk right in and I?ll be happy to help you.?
