The airline had planned to charge the full PetSafe cargo fee to servicemembers who make a permanent move back to the U.S. but changed course and announced a special exception earlier this week following thousands of online complaints about the high costs for flying pets.
?The fees for PetSafe depend on the size of the animal and the length of the trip,? Ryan wrote. ?In some cases it will be less than what they paid before ? and in some cases it might be a bit more.?
Under the special military program, servicemembers will continue to check their pets as luggage and will not pay a freight fee, she said.
United is a federal contract carrier that services many Pacific routes, so servicemembers traveling on official duty are often booked to fly on the airline at a reduced cost to the military. The cost to transport pets, however, must be paid by the servicemember.

IN A few days, Elizabeth Morris, the coroner of Australia's Northern Territory, will open the fourth inquest into one of the country's most infamous incidents.
The hearing will seek to identify once and for all the cause of death of 9-week-old Azaria Chamberlain, who disappeared from her parents' tent at Uluru (Ayers Rock) in August 1980. Her body has never been found.
Her mother Lindy was convicted of murder in 1982 and jailed. Then in 1986 Azaria's jacket was found in a dingo's lair. Lindy was released and the evidence used against her was found to be spectacularly flawed.
Lindy's plight struck a chord around the world. Even Hollywood came calling. "My God, the dingoes took my baby" is an oft-repeated line from the resulting film A Cry in the Dark.
The Chamberlain family now hope to find some sort of resolution by securing an official finding that a dingo was responsible for Azaria's death.
But for an entire species the future is uncertain. What if it is judged to be a baby killer?
Right from the start everybody had an opinion on whether a dingo could have killed Azaria. Many were not prepared to believe it.
The fact that - with the exception of Aboriginal people - very few Australians had any experience of dingoes did not seem to matter. Even if they had wanted to read the relevant natural history of dingo behaviour it was sparse. The problem was that it was not just an ordinary animal and easily classified. At one level it is Canis lupus dingo, a subspecies of dog that arrived in Australia from Asia 3500 years ago as a domesticated animal that later reverted to living in wild packs.
Old books on dog breeds show other aliases: "Australian native dog", "Australian wild dog" and "warrigal". Names are significant and show that the dingo entered the lexicon of Australian nationhood.
It was considered native, wild, and associated with Aboriginal people as a domestic dog, perhaps as a guard dog or hunting dog. Its "true nature" is difficult, if not impossible, to pin down. Anthropologists would rightly say such an animal is dangerously ambiguous. The truth is that the dingo has never been exclusively wild or domesticated, and this is where the danger lies.
In a skilful reading of the way the dingo has entered Aboriginal stories and mythology, Meryll Parker, whose PhD thesis was on the animal, shows how it appears in myths as a fitting metaphor for humans, capable of love, affection, good parenting, loyalty and cooperation. However Parker also points out the existence of "warning myths". Aboriginal people knew about another side to the dingo: that like them it faced adverse conditions and would take food wherever it could.
Repeatedly, Parker found Aboriginal stories and recorded conversations emphasising how the young and the frail should not wander off alone or be allowed to fall behind moving groups, how babies must be carefully looked after in camps, and how the dingo had a reputation for sneaking in behind their wind shelters.
By contrast, most white Australians who expressed an opinion had never been near a dingo. What counted to them was the animal's brutal experience with authorities in their country. Precisely because it had been mercilessly hunted and widely eradicated by the livestock industry, it appeared rather like the heroic figure of the outlaw, or bushranger, resisting authority. Many Australians are distrustful of powerful interest groups and not easily persuaded to exercise muscle over the powerless.

Yet after a multitude of reports of biting, including one in which a 14-month-old child was dragged into the bush, and another in which a pack attacked an elderly German woman sunbathing, the conservation discourse quickly shifted to consider culling. It is telling that these incidents were blamed on "unnatural" behaviour. Then in April 2001, 9-year-old Clinton Gage was attacked and quickly killed by two dingoes on the island.
If the conservation movement insists on unrealistic conceptions of the dingo, as happened with Fraser Island, then the future of the species in Australia does not look good. Attacks may continue, with culling of problem animals the inevitable result.
However, if it is finally accepted that a dingo killed Azaria, and that dingoes naturally have a complex repertoire of behaviours that include symbiotic and predatory associations with humans, then it can be assigned its place on the landscape as a dangerous animal and conserved as such animals are everywhere, with its separation from people given due weight.

Switching camps: Gray Maynard?s move from Xtreme Couture to AKA
With the massive growth of MMA, the stakes have gone through the roof for fighters in the UFC. Between improved salaries, discretionary bonuses, appearance fees and marketing deals, the difference between a champion and a contender can be staggering.
"These guys are making millions of dollar in every fight. If Gray Maynard was the champion right now, he'd be a millionaire. [...] He's not. He lost a lot of money by losing that fight," Frank Trigg said on "The MMA Insiders Show" on Las Vegas' ESPNRadio1100/98.9 FM.
Following a loss to Frank Edgar at UFC 136, Maynard felt that sting. He'd come so close, but in the end, Edgar has the belt and the big assignments.

Maynard, faced with climbing back up the ladder, felt it was time for a change. A Las Vegas mainstay since 2006, he left Xtreme Couture and moved to American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, Ca. But it wasn't simply about freshening things up.
"Gray just was not prepared. It was really one of those deals where a coach within his staff just would not pay attention any other coaches. He was getting really upset if any other coach tried to explain to him 'hey, this is how hard I'm going to push Gray in my session. You need to back off in your session so he can recover," said Trigg, a former trainer partner of Maynard's at Xtreme Couture. "[Maynard] wasn't prepared. It's ultimately up to one coach that didn't pay attention."
John Gunderson, another former teammate of Maynard's in Sin City, echoed the same sentiment about Maynard being less than prepped for the biggest fight of his life."The last fight Gray wasn't mentally prepared or physically prepared for that fight. I don't think he trained hard enough and he knows that. I think if Gray really put the time in and the work in, Gray could finish him," Gunderson said.
Maynard made to decision to extricate himself from the drama well before the Edgar fight took place.
"We knew six weeks before the fight," Trigg said. "Gray said 'look win, lose or draw, this is my last fight. I'm out of here. I gotta leave Xtreme Couture."

Randy Couture, who was away from the gym for much of the early part of 2011, returned to find a big mess and one of his top fighters leaving. Couture cleaned house with coaches Gil Martinez and Ron Frazier moving elsewhere.
Martinez, with a boxing background, was Maynard's main coach. Whether it was his fault or not that Maynard underachieved, it's pretty clear that the former Michigan State wrestler was way too boxing-centric in his fights against Edgar.
It sounds like Maynard is never going to make the mistake of putting his eggs all in one basket.
"He's not officially joining AKA, he's going up there to train. We've all come to the realization that you can't be in one spot anymore," Trigg said. "If you want to be a great MMA fighter, you have to go down and train with Jose Aldo in Brazil. [...] You've got to go to different places. That's why GSP got so good so quickly. He didn't stay in Montreal. Gray has realized that's what he has to do."

Here's hoping the change allows Maynard to take things to the next level. He may still be the best guy in the world at lightweight, but with all the competition out there at 155 pounds, he's probably got a long climb back up the ladder.

Kodak gets court approval to borrow $950 million, end theater sponsorship
Kodak took another step along the road to recovery yesterday, after receiving court approval to borrow $950 million in restructuring funds. Nearly a month after the camera maker filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, US Bankruptcy Judge Allen Gropper granted Kodak's request on Thursday, allowing the company to continue operations during its ongoing transition. Gropper's decision, handed down in a Manhattan court, follows a series of negotiations between Kodak and its lenders, and adds an extra $300 million to the $650 million awarded during January's Chapter 11 filing. The company is also allowed to end its sponsorship of the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles, after successfully arguing that doing so would be in the best interest of Kodak and its creditors. Under the deal, Kodak is obliged to pay $72 million over the course of 20 years. It currently shells out $3.6 million per year and still has $38 million in outstanding payments, but Kodak's lawyers argued that the agreement was too costly. Kodak Chairman and CEO Antonio Perez issued the following statement in response to yesterday's decision: "Today's agreement is another step towards ensuring that Kodak is positioned to execute on the goals the Company set out last month: Bolster our liquidity in the U.S. and abroad, monetize our non-strategic intellectual property, fairly resolve legacy liabilities, and enable Kodak to focus on its most valuable business lines."

CAIRO (AP) ? The leader of Egypt's largest Islamist party has rejected U.S. threats to cut aid over a spat about nonprofit groups operating in the country, saying they are out of line and could imperil the peace deal with Israel.
The comments by Mohammed Morsi, the leader of the political arm of the Muslim Brotherhood, were carried by the state news agency Thursday and were posted on the party Facebook page.
Egypt claims the four U.S. groups are fomenting protests against the country's military rulers and sowing discord. Judges have referred 16 Americans, including six currently in Egypt and barred from traveling, and 27 others to criminal court. No date for the trial has been set yet.
The dispute has shaken relations between Washington and Cairo, and U.S. officials and legislators have threatened to cut aid to Egypt ? $1.3 billion in military assistance and $250 million in economic assistance ? if the issue is not resolved.
Morsi said the annual U.S. aid is part of its commitment to Egypt's 1979 treaty with Israel ? a bedrock of U.S. interests in the Middle East ? and should not be at risk because of the dispute over the nonprofit groups.
"The U.S. is a principle part of this agreement and its guarantor. There is no room for talking about aid except in the framework of discussing the peace deal," Morsi said. "Brandishing threats to stop this aid is out of place. Otherwise, the peace deal would be reconsidered or it could flounder."
Morsi's comments are in line with previous statements from Egyptian officials who have said the peace deal with Israel is not scared and can be amended. But Morsi's remarks are the first since the spat with Washington erupted in December.
After years of being targeted by a security crackdown under Hosni Mubarak, the Brotherhood was emerged as the dominant political force since Mubarak was ousted in a popular uprising a year ago. The group's political arm, the Freedom and Justice Party. which Morsi heads, is the pre-eminent force in Egypt's parliament, with nearly half of the seats.
A senior Cabinet minister, Faiza Aboul Naga, had accused the U.S. groups of using the foreign funds to foment pro-democracy protests against the country's military rulers, who took over after Hosni Mubarak was ousted in a popular uprising a year ago.
The U.S. nonprofit organizations under investigation ? including the National Democratic Institute and the International Republican Institute ? blame Aboul Naga, an old Mubarak stalwart, of pushing the campaign.
On Wednesday, the Muslim Brotherhood said it supports the government's position regarding the aid groups and rejects U.S. pressure to drop the case.
The foreign funding affair has also been interpreted by many among Egypt's pro-democracy groups as part of a larger plan to neutralize rights groups and other civil society organizations who challenged Mubarak and continue to challenge what they say are grave rights violations by the military rulers.
Investigative judges have said a second phase of the probe is looking into Egyptian groups receiving foreign funds.
The Brotherhood, which previously has backed the military's crackdown on pro-democracy and rights organizations, is itself an unregistered group that does not disclose information about its finances, saying only that it finances its activities through member subscriptions and donations from businessmen.
The Brotherhood doesn't openly oppose the peace deal with Israel, but has said it would consider amending it to allow more Egyptian troops along the border with Israel. They also have said they would put the agreement to a public referendum.
In his comments, Morsi voiced similar sentiments.
"We want the peace to continue in a way that would preserve the interests of the Egyptian people," he said.
The Brotherhood's deputy chairman, Khairat el-Shater, told Al-Jazeera television that U.S. aid should not be conditional and should continue to flow as a "compensation" for years of supporting Mubarak's autocratic regime.

Jaegersborggade, a small street on the outskirts of the N?rrebro neighbourhood, oozes creativity. You find things you never knew you needed. It's nice in the early evening when you can still catch a bit of sun. I often stick around for dinner at the exquisite Restaurant Rel?, named the city's Best New Restaurant 2011. The food is excellent, yet the set-up is informal and relaxed. If I want to have a nice time with a girl that I like, I'll take her here.

Dining at Fiskebar (literally Fish Bar) is a pleasure. It's relaxed, not at all snobbish, with excellent seafood picked up from the local fishing boats or outstanding markets, and good wines. In many places, if you want a sublime restaurant experience, you need to get all fancied up. Here, all you need is to be yourself and enjoy the tasty food. The style is simple, a modern industrial environment. You can book a table, but I recommend sitting by the round bar in the middle. Instead of ordering one main course, I usually order three to four starters, such as lumpfish roe, oyster, crab, etc.

Experts say Gingrich moon base dreams not lunacy (AP)
WASHINGTON ? Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich wants to create a lunar colony that he says could become a U.S. state. There's his grand research plan to figure out what makes the human brain tick. And he's warned about electromagnetic pulse attacks leaving America without electricity.
To some people, these ideas sound like science fiction. But mostly they are not.
Several science policy experts say the former House speaker's ideas are based in mainstream science. But somehow, Gingrich manages to make them sound way out there, taking them first a small step and then a giant leap further than where other politicians have gone.
Gingrich's promise that "by the end of my second term we will have the first permanent base on the moon" got amped up in a recent debate in Florida, which lost thousands of jobs with the end of the space shuttle program. By then, the lunar base had become a colony and even a potential state, and his moon ideas were ridiculed by rival Mitt Romney.
Returning to the moon and building an outpost there is not new. Until three years ago, it was U.S. policy and billions of dollars were spent on that idea.
Staying on the moon dates at least to 1969, when a government committee recommended that NASA first build a winged, reusable space shuttle followed by a space station and then a moon outpost. In 1989, President George H.W. Bush proposed going to the moon and staying there.
Sixteen years later, in 2005, his son, President George W. Bush, proposed a similar lunar outpost, phased out the space shuttle program and spent more than $9 billion designing a return to the moon program.
George Washington University space policy director Scott Pace, who was NASA's associate administrator in the second Bush administration and is a Romney supporter, said the 2020 lunar base date Gingrich mentioned was feasible when it was proposed in 2005.
But it is no longer, felled by funding cuts and President Barack Obama's decision to cancel the program. Pace said it would be hard to figure out when NASA could get back to the moon, but that such a return is doable.
What kept killing return-to-the moon plans were the costs, starting in 1969. The proposal died 20 years later when the price tag was released: more than $700 billion in current dollars. The second President Bush's plans started running into problems due to insufficient funding. After a special commission said those plans were not sustainable, Obama cancelled the return-to-the-moon program. Instead, he ordered NASA to aim astronauts toward an asteroid and eventually Mars, something many space experts say is even more ambitious.
"Some of you may like it and you may dislike it, but I gave the boldest explanation of going into space since John F. Kennedy in 1961," Gingrich said this week in Florida. "I believe in an America of big ideas and big solutions. I believe if we unleash the American people we will rebuild the American dream."
In Florida, nearly all the Republican presidential candidates promoted private companies sending astronauts into space. Several companies are building private spaceships. Commercial space companies taking over the job of getting Americans into low Earth orbit is a cornerstone of the Obama space plan. But, again, money has been an issue.
For example, NASA received $406 million in its current budget for private space programs. Obama had asked Congress for $805 million.
Neal Lane, former head of the National Science Foundation and White House science adviser during the Clinton administration, said Gingrich's proposals aren't crazy, although he may disagree with some of them. Gingrich's ideas and actions are "very pro-science," said Lane, who credited Gingrich with protecting federal science research from budget cuts in the 1990s.
"He's on the edge of mainstream thinking about big science. Except for the idea of establishing a colony on the moon, it's not over the edge," added Syracuse University science policy professor Henry Lambright.
In Iowa, Gingrich pushed a "brain science" initiative that advocates spending more private and federal money to map the human brain to help fight and cure Alzheimer's disease. He said the idea was based on the experience of watching his late mother's transformation from a happy person with friends to living in a long-term care facility suffering from bipolar disease, depression and physical ailments.
Gingrich said his "whole emphasis on brain science" is based on his mother's depression and mental illnesses. Discussing the issue in Iowa, he wiped away a tear, saying: "It's not a theory. It's in fact, my mother."
The idea of mapping the brain to figure out how it works is a traditional scientific approach to a difficult problem. Scientists have tried to conquer disease by mapping the human genome and figuring out the basic biology of cancer, said Arizona State University science policy professor Dan Sarewitz. The trouble is that, in the past, it hasn't paid off as promised, he said.
Gingrich also has raised eyebrows with his dire warnings about the threat of electromagnetic pulses. The fear being that a nuclear bomb detonated hundreds of miles above America could knock out the country's electricity for a long time. In 2009, Gingrich said it "may be the greatest threat we face ... We would in fact lose our civilization in a matter of seconds."
Paul Fischbeck, a professor of engineering and risk at Carnegie Mellon University, said the threat has existed for about a half a century and is real. But "it's getting more likely and more dangerous" as America becomes more electronic-dependent and other countries advance in technology, he said.
Still, it's space where Gingrich dreams biggest and raises the most eyebrows.
Much of the criticism of his space plans, especially in the media, have been unfair, said Alan Stern, NASA's space sciences chief during George W. Bush's administration. He said Gingrich is just thinking big, like a pioneer.
"That's how `Star Trek' begins," said Stern, vice president of the Southwest Research Institute and director of the Florida Space Institute. "But when a government guy or politician talks that way, they just get clobbered about being unrealistic and that's unfortunate."
