Syrian troops push back in fight on Damascus edges (AP)

BEIRUT ? Syrian forces heavily shelled the restive city of Homs on Monday, and troops pushed back dissident troops from some suburbs on the outskirts of Damascus in an offensive trying to regain control of the capital's eastern doorstep, activists said.

President Bashar Assad's regime is intensifying its assault aimed at crushing army defectors and protesters, even as the West tries to overcome Russian opposition and win a new U.N. resolution demanding a halt to Syria's crackdown on the 10-month-old uprising. Activists reported at least 28 civilians killed on Monday.

With talks on the resolution due to begin Tuesday, a French official said at least 10 members of the Security Council backed the measure, which includes a U.N. demand that Assad carry out an Arab League peace plan. The plan requires Assad to hand his powers over to his vice president and allow the creation of a unity government within two months. Damascus has rejected the proposal.

A text needs support from nine nations on the 15-member U.N. Security Council to go to a vote but would still be subject to a veto from one of the permanent members. The French official spoke on condition of anonymity in line with departmental rules.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and the British and French foreign ministers were heading to New York to push for backing of the measure in Tuesday's U.N. talks. In a statement, Clinton condemned the regime's escalation of violence "in the strongest possible terms," calling the shelling of civilian areas "brutal."

In London, British Prime Minister David Cameron's office urged Moscow to reconsider its opposition.

"Russia can no longer explain blocking the U.N. and providing cover for the regime's brutal repression," a spokeswoman for Cameron said, on customary condition of anonymity in line with policy.

Russia, which has veto power in the council, insists it won't support any resolution it believes could open the door to an eventual foreign military intervention in Syria, the way an Arab-backed U.N. resolution cleared the way for NATO airstrikes in Libya. Instead, the Kremlin said Monday it was trying to put together negotiations in Moscow between Damascus and the opposition.

It said Assad's government has agreed to participate. The opposition has in the past rejected any negotiations unless violence stops, and there was no immediate word whether any of the multiple groups that make up the anti-Assad camp would attend.

The United Nations estimated several weeks ago that more than 5,400 people have been killed in Syria's crackdown since the uprising against Assad's rule began in March. The bloodshed has continued since ? with more than 190 killed in the past five days ? and the U.N. says it has been unable to update the figure.

Regime forces on Monday heavily shelled the central city of Homs, which has been one of the cities at the forefront of the uprising, activists said. Heavy machine gun fire hit the city's restive Baba Amr district.

The Syrian Human Rights Observatory reported that 14 were killed in the city on Monday. Another activist group, the Local Coordination Committees, put the number at 15. Both also reported the discovery of a family of six ? a couple and their four children ? who had been killed by gunfire several days earlier in the city's Karm el-Zeitoun district.

The past three days, pro-Assad forces have been fighting to take back a string of suburbs on the eastern approach to Damascus where army defectors who joined the opposition had seized control.

Government troops managed on Sunday evening to take control of two of the districts closest to Damascus, Ein Tarma and Kfar Batna, said Rami Abdul-Rahman, the London-based head of the Observatory.

On Monday, the regime forces were trying to take the next suburbs farther out, with heavy fighting in the districts of Saqba and Arbeen, he said.

At least five civilians were killed in the fighting near Damascus, the Observatory and LCC said. The Observatory also reported 10 army defectors and eight regime troops or security forces killed around the country.

The reports could not be independently confirmed. Syrian authorities keep tight control on the media and have banned many foreign journalists from entering the country.

The wide-scale offensive near the capital suggested the regime is worried that military defectors could close in on Damascus, which has remained relatively quiet while most other Syrian cities have slipped into chaos since the uprising began in March.

The violence has gradually approached the capital. In the past two weeks, army dissidents have become more visible, seizing several suburbs on the eastern edge of Damascus and setting up checkpoints where masked men wearing military attire and wielding assault rifles stop motorists and protect anti-regime protests.

Their presence so close to the capital is astonishing in tightly controlled Syria and suggests the Assad regime may either be losing control or setting up a trap for the fighters before going on the offensive.

Regime forces, backed by tanks and armored vehicles, heavily outgun and outnumber the defectors, who have organized into a force known as the Free Syrian Army, but whose true numbers are unknown. However, the military can't cover everywhere at once, and when it puts down the dissidents in one location, they arise in another.

The dissidents have seemed effective in hit-and-run attacks. On Monday, they freed five imprisoned comrades in an assault on a military base in the northeastern province of Idlib, the Observatory and LCC reported. Outside the city of Hama, military defectors attacked a large military checkpoint, destroying several transport trucks, the two groups said.

State media reported that an "armed terrorist group" blew up a gas pipeline at dawn Monday. The pipeline carries gas from the central province of Homs to an area near the border with Lebanon. SANA news agency reported that the blast happened in Tal Hosh, which is about five miles (eight kilometers) from Talkalakh, along the border with Lebanon.

Further details were not immediately available.

There have been several pipeline attacks since the Syrian uprising began, but it is not clear who is behind them.

Assad's regime has blamed "terrorists" for driving the country's uprising, not protesters seeking democratic change.

Castro defends one-party system as bulwalk against U.S. (Reuters)

HAVANA (Reuters) ? President Raul Castro defended Cuba's one-party political system as a bulwark against U.S. imperialism and said it would remain as it is in a speech on Sunday to a Communist Party conference.

He also said previously announced plans to put term limits on the country's leaders were not fully official, but could gradually go ahead.

This weekend's conference, which is the first in the party's history, came amid wide-ranging reforms that have given Cubans the right to open small businesses and to buy and sell cars, but have included no promises of significant political change.

Castro held to that line in his speech when he railed against the United States, Cuba's longtime ideological foe, and its political system and said the Caribbean island 90 miles from Florida intended to remain a one-party state.

The Communist Party is the only legal political party in Cuba and, under a national constitution in effect since 1976, the supreme guiding force of the society and the state.

"In Cuba, based on its experience in the long history of the fight for independence and national sovereignty, we defend the one-party system instead of the demagoguery and commercialization of politics," Castro said.

He said permitting additional parties would open the door to U.S. interference. It "would be the equivalent of legalizing a party of imperialism on our soil," Castro said.

While the party will remain unchallenged, Castor said the country's leaders will be limited to two consecutive five-year terms, an idea he first mentioned at a party congress in April.

Castro said the party was still working out the legal measures for term limits, which will require a change to the constitution, but that implementation could begin "gradually, even before the constitution is changed."

He did not explain how that would be done or when it might start.

Term limits would be a break from the past in the Cuba, where Fidel Castro ruled for 49 years after the 1959 revolution and was succeeded by Raul Castro, his younger brother.

They also could help bring new blood into the government, whose current leaders are elderly and have no obvious replacements.

Raul Castro is 80, his vice president Jose Ramon Machado Ventura is 81 and Fidel Castro, now mostly retired but still present behind the scenes, is 85.

There was talk before the conference that the party might impose age limits on leaders and promote new, younger people into the party hierarchy, but there had been no mention of either.

Bert Hoffmann, a Cuba specialist at German Institute of Global Area Studies in Hamburg, said the message of the conference appeared to be "to downplay any expectations that economic reforms might entail political change."

Goblins by Scumbag_Brain

Image

Goblins are a kneehigh species of low to moderate intellect covered in green frog-like skin and sporting a pair of large pointed ears. Native to the wetlands of the south, wild goblin tribes once numbered in the tens of thousands. They now number in the hundreds of thousands, a trend of population growth at odds with other monsters who have seen their numbers drop near to zero after encountering the humans. Goblins, however, were lucky enough to be perfectly adapted for life in the sewers of the expanding kingdoms. Those not shipped to reservations in the west found new homes beneath the streets. There they scavenged for a living and accumulated wealth through the only means open to them, crime.

For the 'civilized' races, goblins are a plague, infesting the city substructure like packs of sentient rats. Young adventurers often start their careers by descending into the dank underworld in search of goblin heads. Goblins are not only small but preternaturally limber so chasing them through the narrow pipes of the sewers is no easy challenge. They also excel at traps and ambushes. Attacking from hiding and in great numbers, they have overpowered many a confident warrior or wizard.

Only a very small percentage of the goblin population actually lives on the reservation and even fewer of those keep the old ways alive. More shamans die every year and every year more goblins convert to the self hating dogma peddled by human priests.

Gargoyles

Image

As a race:
The creatures that were originally sculptures or ornaments have been known to become animated if in a place of healing or holy worship. They are immortal until they either shatter or erode and are surprisingly quick. They are active mainly during the night time but if disturbed they will move during the day light but at a slower rate than during the night.
Different breeds of Gargoyle have been proven to exist. The oldest and most aggressive yet fragile are made of wood and can be easily disposed of if burnt thoroughly. Wooden Gargoyles will attack and feed on any living creature. If one encounters a wooden Gargoyle they should grab a large weapon or run and tell the local authorities.
The youngest and most durable and dormant being the metal gargoyle which has not developed sufficient energy to be any real threat. They feed on passing birds and animals. To dispose of a metal gargoyle you must allow it to rust and decay and then break it away piece by piece. If one encounters a metal Gargoyle they should let the local authorities know and maintain watch on the creature.
Now beware the most cunning of Gargoyle, the stone gargoyle. It has been existence long enough to gain strength to move and is made of a solid material that fire and water do not have such a great effect. This gargoyle has to be shattered or left alone. A rare few have been known to be civil but the vast majority keep to the monasteries they were placed and feast upon the dying or the frail. If one encounters a stone gargoyle and it doesn?t greet them there best bet is to leave it alone and warn the authorities.
No gargoyle is identical and they are masters at blending into there surroundings. If one suspects they are being hunted they should get into a large open area and call for help off anyone nearby.

Weaponry and abilities of the Gargoyle:
If one is to fight a Gargoyle ensure it is during the daylight hours and outside.
Gargoyles can be found with any kind of weapon. Most commonly found with halberds and axes but it is not impossible to find one armed with nothing but its claws. If a gargoyle wishes it can allow itself to appear inanimate by simply staying still, this can cause confusion within its opponent or its prey and allow for it to preform an ambush when the moment is right. Gargoyles have also been known to be exceptional users of holy magic if they have came from a holy ground. They can climb on any surface and move at fast speeds if in the dark. Although a gargoyle may be made to have wings they are far too heavy to fly and the only ones that can glide are wooden gargoyles due to the light nature and how they can be swept up by the strong winds. During the daylight however they can not climb on any surface and so there performance is reduced. Due to the fact they are nocturnal they have enhanced vision at night and dulled vision during the day. Due to the Gargoyles slow metabolism they must only eat once a month or risk damaging themselves.

All alone and the fire grows

Vampire

Vampire are said to have appeared 400 years ago, but they were only recognized as ?real? 200 years ago. The official story says that a necromancer named Juniper Betz was researching immortality, the fruit of this research was a process in which he could take the life force of other living creatures. This new magic allowed him to become immortal, this came with a price. He no longer could get nutrition from normal food, his body could only work once he ingested pure life energy, which was easiest to obtain through the blood of living beings.

This gave the necromancer the incredible ability to use life force itself as a means to use magic, this type of magic would later be called ?blood magic?. Blood magic is a brand of the magic arts that uses life force itself as means of energy, this makes blood magic very good at interacting with living beings. This include mind control, shape shifting, creation and destruction of life forms and others.

After a while Juniper started a new cult dedicated to his worship,in time those devout enough received the gift of immortality. The cult grew in numbers quickly as the word spread about the miracle powers of Juniper. But once the cult became large enough Juniper and his minions could no longer feed only on their followers. They started hunting the nearby area for humans, soon enough everyone close to the castle was forced to give away their lives or become a devout follower. 50 years later and the area was devoid of any life. The cult slowly began to dwindle, some vampires fought and ate each other, others just left to the wilderness and others left to the cities of the humans.

A small group of vampires formed in the human cities. They began to think of themselves as gods in human form. They constructed a plan to infiltrate and control the church and other powerful organizations by political means. For 150 years the vampires worked in the shadow, trying to manipulate their way into the church to try and obtain ultimate control. But the vampires arrogance and thirst got the best of them. After a while the constant reports of dead people and the strange disappearances forced the church to launch an investigation. The political power that vampires had, helped them at first, but once wards were created to detect necromantic power their true identities were revealed. The whole vampires organization was destroyed, they were proclaimed ?evil? by the church and they have been hunted as monsters ever since.

Now hunted for 200 years, vampires are the verge of extinction, those who survive are cunning and ruthless, most stay way from the human and elven magics that can easily find them. they use their ability at shape shifting to integrate to other races and they are rarely seen close to cities. The last sign of the once powerful vampire race that remains is the old castle of the necromancer. Although abandoned, most peasants and knights stay away from it, as it is thought that if you enter those walls you might end up a vampire yourself.

Vampires Strengths

Vampires are incredibly strong and agile, they are immortal and regenerate at incredible rates while they remain well fed. They can use blood magic, which is exclusive to them and the Dhampirs. Although they can shape shift few are good enough to actually take the shape of anything other than a humanoid race.

Vampire Weaknesses

Vampires are relatively weak to direct sun light. The more a vampire stays in the sun light the weaker he becomes. Being the product of necromancy vampires are also weak to holy magic.

Dhampir

Dhampirs are the half human/ half vampire hybrids. Officially they don?t exist but the church is investigating this phenomenon. Dhampirs are almost human. They retain their ability to eat normal foods but this can only act as temporary solution and sooner or later they have to feed on the life energy of live creatures.

Dhampirs also have some very big differences with the normal strain of vampires. Dhampirs are more human than vampires in a certain way. They cannot be detected with the wards that detect normal vampires. They are not affected by sunlight and they do not have such a strong weakness to holy magic, Holy magic does not harm them but it?s not very good at healing them either. Because of this most Dhampirs can live in the cities with general impunity and most of them do.

On the other hand Dampirs Physical abilities and blood magic capabilities are usually weaker than the normal vampires because they don?t usually feed unless they have to. With a similar diet vampires and dahmpirs do have the same the capabilities with 2 notable exceptions.

Number one, Dhampirs are not immortal they do have a very long life span (around 300 years) but contrary to vampires as they feed their bodies create a combination of an immunity and an allergic reaction to the life energy of other beings. They will need to feed more and more as times go by but at the same time the life energy triggers an adverse effect that becomes more extreme with each consumption. Dhampirs that have the same diet as a normal vampire tend to life around 200 years and than die quick deaths thanks to the allergic reaction.

Number two, dhampirs are relatively bad at shape shifting and the creation or transfiguration of living beings. Because of this Dhampirs tend to move away every 10 years or so to avoid suspicion.

Ogre

Ogres are a species of large bipeds native to the mountainous region Tuchanka, an area known for its harsh climate, scarce resources, and overabundance of vicious predators. Due to the brutality of their surroundings, natural selection has played a significant role in the evolution of the Ogre. Their thick hides are virtually impervious to cuts, scrapes or contusions, and they are highly resistant to environmental hazards, including toxins, radiation, and extreme heat and cold. Consequently their diets can include food and drink which would prove very dangerous to other species?a fact reflected in the Ogre liquor of choice, ryncol, which "hits humans like ground glass". Younger Ogre have yellow or blue tint to their skin only maturing to a deep green after puberty. Their bones are incredibly thick and dense making them nearly impossible to break. Do to that they can fall from incredible heights which is quite common for younger ogre growing up on the mountains more dangerous areas. Ogre are famous for their size and strength, growing to around 11-13 feet. There are legends that say it was Ogre's that formed the mountains by tearing into the earth and piling it up to reach the clouds.

Culture and Government

The harsh Ogre homeland conditioned Ogres psychology for toughness just as it did the body. Ogres have always had a tendency to be selfish, unsympathetic, and blunt. They respect strength and loyalty and tend to view treachery and betrayel to ones Krantt as a death wish. The weak and selfless do not live long. Young Ogre undergo a rite of passage that is overseen by a shaman respective to the clan the Ogre wishes to join. This rite consists of battling various wild fauna, ending with an encounter with a thresher maw. Merely surviving for five minutes is considered proof of worthiness. Killing the thresher maw increases the initiate's prestige and standing. Few outsiders have seen the rite of passage take place, even though there are no rules in Ogre tradition that state that a non-Ogre can't help with the undertaking of the rite by acting as the participants Krantt. The rite of passage and all other rites and traditions are preserved by the clan shaman. The shaman must undergo lengthy and torturous rites to assume the position, and is required to give up his name. Because of this level of commitment, the shaman is one of the most respected members of a clan. Membership of a clan allows a Ogre to own property, join the Horde and apply to serve under a Battlemaster. Ogre have powerful territorial instincts which serve them well in combat, but can create problems; when traveling on the road, for example, Ogre find sharing quarters nearly impossible.

Religion

Ogres have strong religious beliefs. One such example is the ritualistic burial grounds called the Hollows, where the skulls of their ancestors are displayed to remind them of "where we all come from, and where we all go." The Hollows are as sacred as any Ogre place can be, and violence there is forbidden. "The Void" is the Ogre version of the afterlife. The only Deity Ogre are known to pray to is Okeer, believed to be the first Ogre. Though Ogres do recognize other deities whom they call "The Old Gods".

Military Doctrine
Traditional Ogre tactics are built on attritional mass-unit warfare. Equipped with cheap, rugged gear, troop formations were powerful but inflexible. Command and control was very centralized; soldiers in the field who saw a target only needed wait for the order to charge. They focus on developing clean, brute-force economy of motion that exploits their brutal strength to incapacitate enemies with a swift single blow of overwhelming power. Battle Masters and Sergeants are not 'spit and polish,' but they do believe in being well-armed and equipped, preferably with a weapon for each limb. They are callous and brutal, but methodical and disciplined. They use any means at their disposal to achieve their goals, no matter how reprehensible. Hostage-taking and genocide are acceptable means to ensure victory.

Ranking System

The Ogre Horde is broken down into unabashedly simple ranks. At the very top you have the Supreme Battle Master. The Ogre version of a king, will rule with an iron fist. Though discouraged it is not uncommon for the Supreme Battle Master to engage in combat personally, he is Ogre after all.

Councilmen are the members of the Supreme Battle Master's war council. Technically his advisers. Chosen from the Battle Masters who have proven their worth to the horde and most importantly The Supreme Battle Master.

Battle Master is the title given to the commanders of the separate clans in the Horde. Each clan has a Battle Master who is permitted to run things as he sees fit in his village.

Sergeants are in charge of the individual squads or "Krantt" of Ogre warriors. There are usually anywhere from 2 to 20 Sergeants per clan depending on the size of the village.

I should go.

Zombies

Image

Zombies are often confused by the living to be the same as skeletons in the fact that both are undead. While they share a few of the same characteristics there are actually a load of differences. First off, zombies rarely form naturally. Despite all of humanities constant ranting and raging against necromancy, their kind are the ones that practice it the most. And zombies are the unfortunate bastard children of the livings constant intrusions into the realm of the dead

Since most zombies are the byproduct of some back fired attempt from a magician trying to break the natural rules, zombies have a varying degree of behavior. Intelligence can range depending on the type of zombie. Some are about as dumb as a sack of hammers, while others are able to keep hold of some of their memories from when they were alive. Their general abilities depend on how they were formed. However they do share some of the more common traits with other forms of undead, such as being stronger at night, vulnerability to fire, being strong against physical attacks and most having a weakness to holy magic (due to most being forged from necromancy).

Zombies tend to harbor resentment toward beings that practice necromancy, due to subconscious blame at the living creatures that dragged them out of their resting places in the afterlife and shoving them into rotting husk. This can cause some slight distrust towards vampires as well. Even though they are both undead, zombies view the fact that the original vampires came into being willingly through a use of necromancy. Though the animosity towards Dhampir's is less strong.

The most well known kind of zombie is the lich. A lich is able to keep hold of it's memories from life, and sometimes it's own time in the after life if they are allowed, which makes them much smarter then the mindless thralls that work as slaves for necromancers. More dangerous to, as a lich can operate independently and even preform magic. A lich can either be made by a necromancer trying to raise someone from the dead or the necromancer trying to turn undead themselves in an attempt to prolong their time on the living world. The magic that binds a zombie to a necromancer in considered very painful to the undead, giving a feeling like its suffocating when the magic puts a strangle hold on their souls. Raised liches often turn on their masters when they get the chance, which helps cement the popular opinion that all undead are evil even though the lich in question is just trying to stop the necromancer from tormenting it.

Slimes

Image

slimes are arguably the most common, varied and wide spread species in the world. A slime is a strange genderless life form made entirely of liquid. They can be found almost anywhere in the world, from under city sewers, too deep forest, to high mountain ranges, too deep underground caverns, but they mostly prefer area's with access to water. And while they most often encountered and referred in the traditional form of a 'slime', they do have a a huge number of sub-species variations.

Adventurers mostly regard slimes as little more then annoying pest that are at best harmless and at worst annoying. And usually their right, as most slimes are small and aren't aggressive unless provoked, making slimes little more then a distraction. The key word, however, is usually. Some slimes are made out of dangerous substances, making their bodies deadly weapons against hostile creatures. Examples can range from acid, to poison or diseases. Sometimes they can even be made out of liquid metal, able to make their bodies hard and able to crush their enemies with blunt force. Some rare variations are even made of lava! And even if they didn't have these particular breeds as part of their kin, slimes can be extremely dangerous when in groups. All slimes have the innate ability to combine their bodies with others to make larger slimes. Most slime related death are the result of some foolish adventurer thinking they could pass the time bullying some poor defenseless slime, only to turn around and find that it's friends and merged together into a very large, very angry behemoth slime.

Since they often share the sewers with goblins, some slimes are known to coexist peacefully with goblin tribes. The relationship can be from being simple neighbors, to acting as companions.

There are a few facts about slimes that most people aren't aware of. The first is that slimes are actually nearly immortal, in meaning that they don't age. And while the more common breeds are as easy to beat as taking a single swing, actually killing a slime permanently requires effort in removing the remains as they can simply reform themselves after several hours. The exact length of time a slime needs to reform, however, depends on a few factors such as it's size and body make up.

The other fact is that slimes actually are sentient, indeed they will sometimes even take on humanoid shapes for short periods of time. They even have their own language, however few outside of their race can make sense of it, as it mostly consist of squeaks, whistles, and whines. Exactly how intelligent the slimes are is up for debate though. They rarely show examples of their apparent intellect, and there is little to say on how to tell if one slime is any more intelligent then the other.

As you can probably tell there aren't exactly a lot of epic tales of battles with the slimes told by bards. The closest thing to any real excitement with them is the occasional territorial battle between magma slimes and dwarves. Even then the dwarves usually back off as there rarely is anything valuable enough to bother trying to pillage from magma slime nest. However there is one old story about the 'mother' slime, the supposed goddess that all slimes are descended from that was said to be 'as big as a castle'. This is regarded as just a made up story by some drunken adventurer trying to make himself sound more impressive.

Therianthropes

Therianthropes, also known as lycanthropes, werecreatures, or two-faces, are a monster species remarkable for their ability to change shape from a human-like form, to that of a vicious beast form. Therianthropy is generally a trait present at birth. It is possible for a human to be changed into one, though this generally involves fairly stringent preparation, as the process is often fatal.

There are several different therianthrope species, though the most commonly found are the werewolf, werecat, and wererat, though reports of werebears in the northern areas are frequent.
In their human forms, therianthropes can be distinguished by their sharp teeth ,claw-like nails, a scruffy, disobedient hair. Some may also have gold or yellow eyes.
The most remarkable trait about therianthropes is their ability to ?free the beast?, taking on a monstrous form. The trigger that causes this change varies from species to species. Moonlight seems to effect werewolves, while wererats are driven to it by physical strain. The change is said to be very painful and can often result in large bruises and skin lesions. In their beast form they resemble hunched, animalistic humanoids with gangly limbs and elongated faces.
It is said that the change comes with a considerable change in demeanour, making the Were a lot more aggressive and savage. Many will be driven to hurt those that they once considered allies while in this state. The extent of the rage tends to depend on the natural savagery of the animal they become. As a result, werebears tend to wreak havoc on anything in the immediate area, losing all memory of former companions, while wererats will generally continue following their human aspect?s task as a beast and retain a vague memory of those their other half considered a friend, only attacking them in case of hunger or provocation. All Weres lose the ability to speak or perform complex tasks as a beast.

Therianthropes are often hunted for their teeth, claws and blood, which are used as talismans or medicine, a major ingredient for several different potions. Their pelts, with naturally thick skin, are often used to make durable clothing for adventurers, as a result, they are on the decline.

Wererats
Wererats are a species of therianthrope, often thought to be the weaker cousin of werewolves or werecats. Like most therianthropes they possess two forms, one that remains mostly human, and one that takes on animalistic traits.

While quite close to humans, they tend to be seen as bringers of plague and disease, and it is customary for cities to purge any nests that they find within city walls. Wererats, sitting as they do on the low end of the spectrum of therianthropy, tend to serve as easy prey for ?adventurers? keen to make some fast gold.

Despite this claim, wererats are not generally carriers of plague, and most are no less clean than humans of their social standing, which granted, is not often saying much.

In their Were form they resemble hunched humanoids with long tails, wiry limbs and elongated faces filled with sharp, yellow teeth. They are usually proportionally smaller and less muscular than other werecreatures, as well as more fragile, but are capable of impressive feats of stealth and agility in this state.

The change, in a survival-orientated creature like the wererat, is triggered by great physical stress. Hunger, thirst, pain, extreme temperatures or exposure to dangerous situations can trigger the change. The change itself is quite painful, but mercifully fast into the rodent form, the changing back being rather more laborious.

While generally fairly clean creatures, the bite of a wererat is riddled with infection that their bodies have gotten used to. A bite not tended to will cause infection and fever in the victim.

Wererat culture is based heavily around survival, and testing the cunning and initiative of the individual. In times past, wererats dwelt most in the deep forest, and the individuals were valued more highly. With most wererats dwelling in towns or on farmland, packs of wererats enforce their social Darwinism through vicious competition between the young. They?re expected to fight, cheat, outwit, evade, a double-cross one another from an early age, and the weak suffer considerably. Wererats hideouts are generally very crowded, often dirty, and tend to exist in the most run-down properties.

As a species, while somewhat fragile, they?re very hard to kill, and have the capacity to recover from serious illness and injury.

Demi Moore 911 Caller: She 'Smoked Something,' 'She's Convulsing' (omg!)

Demi Moore attends the 'Margin Call' premiere at the Landmark Sunshine Cinema, NYC, on October 17, 2011 -- Getty Images

The 911 call placed from Demi Moore's home on Monday night has been released and Access Hollywood has obtained a copy.

"We need an ambulance here as soon as possible please. Why is an ambulance not on its way right now? Why is this taking so long?" an unidentified female caller can be heard saying to the operator.

"She smoked something, it's not marijuana, but it's similar to incense and she seems to be having convulsions of some sort," the caller continued. "[She's] semi-conscious, barely."

"Was this accidental or intentional?" the operator then asked.

"She smoked something, but the reaction was accidental. It's accidental," the caller explained.

Another female then gets on the call.

"Is she breathing normally?" the operator asked.

"No, not so normally, more sort of shaking and convulsing and burning up... She's been having some issues lately with some other stuff. I don't know what she's been taking," the second female explained. "I'm taking cold water and putting it on her back because she is burning up... She's squeezing hands, she can't speak."

"Has she done this before?" the operator asked.

"I don't know, there's been some stuff recently that we're just finding out," the woman said.

A male then gets on the phone, saying, "She seems to have calmed down little bit and is speaking... She seems much calmed, now she's breathing fine."

As previously reported on, AccessHollywood.com , Demi's rep released a statement on Tuesday concerning the actress' health.

"Because of the stresses in her life right now, Demi has chosen to seek professional assistance to treat her exhaustion and improve her overall health," the rep's statement read. "She looks forward to getting well and is grateful for the support of her family and friends."

Poll: Perry's Texas ratings down after failed run (AP)

AUSTIN, Texas ? Gov. Rick Perry's approval rating in Texas has fallen to a 10-year low since his failed presidential bid, putting him on a par with President Barack Obama in his own home state.

More than half of the people who responded to a statewide poll don't want Perry to run for another term as governor and 45 percent said his failed campaign for the Republican nomination for president hurt Texas' image.

The poll conducted Jan. 21-24 was conducted for The Dallas Morning News, the Austin American Statesman, the San Antonio Express-News, the Houston Chronicle and the Fort Worth Star Telegram. The newspapers published the poll results Thursday.

Forty percent of Texans approve of the job he's doing as governor, a 10-point drop from a year ago and less than Obama's 43 percent statewide approval rating, according to the poll. The Fort Worth Star Telegram said the Democratic president's approval ratings have showed little change in the past two years.

Another 40 percent said they disapprove of the job Perry is doing.

The poll found 53 percent said they don't want Perry to run for a fourth full term in 2014. Since ended his campaign last week, Perry staff have said he could run for another term as governor.

According to the poll, Perry has lost ground among Republicans in a state dominated by the GOP. His approval rating among Republicans dipped from 73 percent to 60 percent, and among independents he fell from nearly half to 27 percent. Until earlier this month at the Iowa caucuses, Perry had never lost an election.

Perry ran for president as a socially conservative candidate and he boasted about his job-creation efforts and the economy in his home state. But he stumbled badly with several flubs on the campaign trail, including his notorious "oops" moment in a nationally televised debate when he couldn't remember all three federal agencies he said he wants to cut.

The poll found 45 percent of Texans think his run hurt Texas' image nationally while only 17 percent said it improved.

The random telephone survey of 806 Texans, including 669 registered voters, has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

Statins May Stave Off Liver Cancer in People With Hepatitis B (HealthDay)

THURSDAY, Jan. 26 (HealthDay News) -- Popular cholesterol-lowering statins may also lower risk for liver cancer among people with hepatitis B, a new study shows. Hepatitis B, an inflammation of the liver due to the hepatitis B virus, is one of the main causes of liver cancer.

This is not the first time that statins have shown promise in reducing risk for cancer. Other studies have hinted that these drugs may play a role in preventing certain types of cancer, including breast cancer.

In the new study of more than 33,000 individuals with hepatitis B followed from 1997 to 2008, those who took a statin were less likely to develop liver cancer, when compared to participants who were not prescribed statins. What's more, the longer a person took statins, the greater the liver-cancer risk reduction. Study participants were prescribed the statins to treat high cholesterol levels. Overall, 1,021 people developed liver cancer during the study period.

More research is needed to see how statins may lower liver cancer risk among people with hepatitis B, the researchers said.

"Statins have potential protective effects against cancers [and] carriers of hepatitis B virus infection have a substantial risk of [liver] carcinoma," said Dr. Pau-Chung Chen, a professor of environmental medicine and epidemiology at National Taiwan University, in Taipei. "Statin use is not only a benefit to preventing cardiovascular diseases, but also an additional, convenient and acceptable strategy for preventing hepatocellular carcinoma," or liver cancer, Chen said.

However, statins can cause a potentially dangerous rise in liver enzymes and liver damage. Regular liver function tests are required for all people who take statins.

The study appeared online Jan. 23 in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

"This is exciting and unequivocally solid research," said Dr. Eugene Schiff, a professor of medicine and director of the Center for Liver Diseases at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

"One of the issues is that statins are relatively contraindicated in people with liver disease," Schiff said. But "the take-home message for people with hepatitis B or anybody with liver disease is that statins are safe. This re-emphasizes the point that if someone has chronic hepatitis B and there is an indication for statins, they should get them and they may be beneficial far beyond lowering cholesterol: They may also reduce their risk for liver cancer."

Dr. David Bernstein, chief of hepatology at North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center in Manhasset, N.Y., is more cautious. "In almost all other liver conditions, cirrhosis must be present before [liver cancer] develops," he said. During cirrhosis, scar tissue replaces healthy liver tissue. "Statins must be used with caution in patients with cirrhosis, which can limit their use in patients with liver disease at risk of developing liver cancer," he said. "Further studies are needed in this patient population to confirm these findings."

Obama looks to Mich. to revive clean energy debate (AP)

DETROIT ? A Michigan factory that made luxury yachts before the recession and diversified to add wind energy products when times got tough was touted by President Barack Obama at his State of the Union Address as an example of an industry creating forward-thinking jobs ? with a little help from the government.

In urging Congress to approve clean energy tax credits, Obama cited Energetx Composites LLC, a wind turbine blade manufacturer in Holland, Mich., that received millions in government assistance. Invited to sit in the first lady's box during the speech Tuesday night was Bryan Ritterby, 58, who went to work for Energetx after being laid off from his furniture-making jobs three years ago.

"Some technologies don't pan out; some companies fail," Obama said. "But I will not walk away from the promise of clean energy. I will not walk away from workers like Bryan."

Without mentioning it by name, Obama appeared to be defending his administration's support of Solyndra LLC, the California solar panel maker that received a $528 million government loan but filed for bankruptcy court protection last year. Energetx is in a somewhat different situation than Solyndra but still must fend off skepticism from critics who contend government-assisted clean energy products often don't produce enough high-wage jobs to make it worth the money.

"They must have had to look pretty hard to find someone working in alternative energy," said Donald Grimes, a senior research specialist at University of Michigan. "I think the politics is what's driving almost this delusion of where the jobs are. If you want to tout the future of where green energy jobs are going, it's going to be garbage collection."

Indeed, waste management and treatment is among the categories with the most "clean economy" jobs in the United States, according to a 2011 report by the Metropolitan Policy Program of the Brookings Institution, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit think tank. The category represented about 385,000 jobs in 2010; the wind industry employed 24,294 the same year, the report said.

In 2009, a state board announced a $27.3 million tax credit over 15 years to encourage Energetx to expand. The money is tied to the creation of about 1,000 jobs at the company, and won't be awarded in cases where jobs don't materialize. It also got a $3.5 million state award for "energy excellence" in 2010, which was expected to be matched by the U.S. Department of Energy.

The company is far short of its ultimate job target now ? with fewer than 50 employees currently making the turbine blades and other projects ? but it expects to hire roughly 100 more this year, mostly in composite manufacturing. The company would not release specific wage ranges, but human resources director Steven Busch said pay will be competitive with similar manufacturing jobs in the Midwest.

U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga, a Republican whose district includes Holland, said he doesn't "see a Solyndra-type situation" with Energetx or other clean energy companies in southwest Michigan, such as those that produce batteries for alternative-fuel vehicles. Combined, the area around Holland has about 7.5 percent of its workforce employed in the broad category of "clean jobs," compared with the national average of 2 percent.

"This isn't our preferred route, but if this is the route that's presented to us, we're going to take it and make it as successful as we can make," Huizenga said. "Ultimately, the business principles have to be sound. Whether it's wind, solar, nuclear ... these industries aren't going to just be able to depend on government subsidies forever. At some point you've got to be able to stand on your own two feet."

While Michigan remains stung by the decline in the auto industry, some officials see this new technology as an area where it can lead again.

"It's communicating a message to people: This is a place on the cutting-edge of change and solving problems," said John C. Austin, a Brookings senior fellow and visiting faculty member at University of Michigan. "That's been our big problem in Michigan. We fought for years protecting the auto industry from change. Now we can be the leader in increasing the production of electric cars."

Brookings officials acknowledge the alternative industry is hard to assess since such jobs pervade all parts of the economy, but its study last year aimed to provide a comprehensive, detailed snapshot of what the sector truly represents.

Erik Nordman, an assistant professor of renewable energy and lead investigator of the West Michigan Wind Assessment project, says the Energetx's transition isn't as far-fetched as it might seem because the keel of a yacht closely resembles the blade of a turbine.

With wind energy seemingly more marketable in the future, West Michigan economic developers envision a time Energetx will expand and have hundreds of workers.

"This is new product entry," said Rick Chapla of The Right Place, a western Michigan economic development organization. "This is complex manufacturing. This is not something that has been done or will be done overnight. It won't be done in one year. It will be done over a period of years."

It's fertile political ground for Obama too. Not only is Michigan considered a swing state in the November election, but he has made several trips to the area to tout clean energy projects, and his administration has provided $2.4 billion in federal grants to develop next-generation electric vehicles and batteries.

Grimes remains skeptical. He says it's appropriate for the government to invest in research, but not in fledgling commercial enterprises. He cites Solyndra as an example but argues even "picking winners" can prove problematic, since "creative destruction" is a common byproduct of successful yet disruptive technologies.

"They don't do well with innovation because it costs people jobs," Grimes said.

Hanging Up Cellphones in Prison (ContributorNetwork)

New state laws and technologies are helping to curb use of smuggled cellphones by prison inmates, a growing epidemic that has been linked to coordinating prison escapes as well as the continuity of orchestrated gang activity outside the prison walls.

Last week, Nebraska lawmakers advanced a bill that would make the smuggling of contraband illegal, punishable by a year in prison.

Nebraska state Sen. Norman Wallman represents the county where the bill was founded.

"They had an inmate that came from another facility and after a strip search they found a cell phone on her, but there wasn't anything they could really do to her," Wallman said via email. "They could only use in-house discipline in our jails when people had or brought in contraband."

Recently, other states have made advances in upgrading the technology used in securing their prisons.

In December, the Illinois Department of Corrections made inquiries to security companies regarding the cost of equipping scanning devices to detect mobile phone use, according to the Times of Northwest Indiana. A month earlier, California passed legislation to allow the state's Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation to identify calls leaving and entering the prison and blocking those that are unwarranted.

The technology of identifying the usage of mobile devices has progressed considerably in recent years.

Following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, Scott Schober, President and CEO of Berkeley Varitronics, a telecommunications and engineering firm located in Metuchen, New Jersey, was called upon by emergency responders in an attempt to locate cellphones in the rubble at ground zero. Though they had some success, Schober found that the astronomical cost, size and range of the equipment was not practical at the time.

Today, Schober's cellphone detectors are less large and clunky devices than they are something you would see in a spy movie. In some cases Schober's company has created antennas for detectors that fit neatly into Sharpie pens. Small enough to be placed inconspicuously in a shirt pocket, the pen will begin to vibrate around any active cellphones.

Schober's company has been also hired to embed their detection devices into bullet-proof vests, water bottles, hollowed-out books, power strips, and wall-mounted thermostat units.

Schober said his technology has been used in hundreds of prisons in the United States and has also been used by the Drug Enforcement Agency to help in aiding drug busts and border patrol to help corral the smuggling of people from Mexico to the United States.

"This technology is getting smaller and more powerful," Schober said. "And because of the small size of our company we can get affordable equipment quickly to the market."

While Schober's detectors work to find cellphones already in possession of an inmate, other companies are founding technology in an attempt to stop cell phones from getting into the prison.

Peter Harris is the Chief Strategic Officer for Iscon, a company that sells standup and handheld devices that combine infrared and heat transfer to find objects hidden in or under clothing.

The devices can be used for visitors entering the prison or inmates detained within.

Harris said the standup unit costs one-fifth the price of the current body scanners used in airports and unlike an airport unit, does not intrude on privacy by penetrating the clothing or use radiation.

"It works by running some warm air over the inmate's clothes," Harris said. "This is followed by a sensitive flare."

The flare creates a black and white image similar to an X-ray, which shows the imprint of an object against the clothing.

Harris said the handheld device is better for use with more confined spaces such as cells, where random inspections can reveal objects hidden in mattresses not visible to the naked eye.

Another advantage to the scanner is the elimination of pat downs which are routine in a prison setting.

"This technology is a very safe and non-intrusive way to see inside clothing." Harris said.

npc sharing

The GM has the ability to set any rules for his/her game that she/she desires. If the GM wishes to retain exclusive control of NPCs for the sake of controlling the story, that is entirely at their discretion. As long as the GM doesn't have a problem with it, players can also create NPCs and then control them exclusively or share them as they see if. It's about all about what the particular RP wants and the best way to accomplish goals.

Brad Pitt On Oscar Nods: 'Pancakes For Everyone'

Actor tells Today Show he's 'ecstatic' about 'Moneyball' and 'Tree of Life' nominations.

On Tuesday morning (January 24), "Moneyball" star Brad Pitt heard his name called several times when the Oscar nominations were announced. Shortly after, the actor called in to "The Today Show" to open up about being recognized not only for his acting skills, but also his work getting the baseball film off the ground as a producer.

"We're ecstatic over here. It means so much considering this film was just dead on the rocks two years ago," he said from L.A. "It took a lot of people to get it to the screen. It's a great honor. I'm really happy."

Pitt got a couple nods thanks to his producer credit on the best picture nominee and his work in the leading role. His co-star Jonah Hill also got some love with a supporting actor nomination. "I'm so happy for Jonah Hill," he gushed. "I can't tell you." Another film he recently starred in, "Tree of Life," also got some Academy love, making Pitt's morning an especially good one. "I'm doubly happy that 'Tree of Life' made it in there," he said. "We thought we were all but forgotten; just excited for [director and nominee] Terry Malick."

Pitt will once again face off against his pal and Golden Globe winner George Clooney for Actor in a Leading Role for his work in "The Descendants," but he's not too worried about it. "I'm sure we'll be exchanging many good words later," he said. "It's more fun to have a friend there and no one does it better than George. I say give him all the trophies, and when you run out of trophies, make some new ones and give him those too. " When asked what prize he wants to win most come Oscars night, he played it cool saying, "I could not pick. I'm just so happy that both these films have been recognized. 'Tree of Life' was just as difficult to get made and it's gonna be pancakes for everyone this morning."

Did "Moneyball" deserve all the Academy love? Let us know what you think in the comments.

Official: possibility of unregistered passengers (AP)

GIGLIO, Italy ? Unregistered passengers might have been aboard the stricken cruise liner that capsized off this Tuscan island, a top rescue official said Sunday, raising the possibility that the number of missing might be higher than previously announced.

Divers, meanwhile, pulled out a woman's body from the capsized Costa Concordia on Sunday, raising to 13 the number of people dead in the Jan. 13 accident.

Civil protection official Francesca Maffini told reporters the victim was wearing a life vest and was found in the rear of a submerged portion of a ship by a team of fire department divers.

Earlier, Italian authorities raised the possibility that the real number of the missing was unknown because some unregistered passengers might have been aboard. As of Sunday, 19 people are listed as missing, but that number could be higher.

"There could have been X persons who we don't know about who were inside, who were clandestine" passengers aboard the ship, Franco Gabrielli, the national civil protection official in charge of the rescue effort, told reporters at a briefing on the island of Giglio, where the ship, with 4,200 people aboard rammed a reef and sliced open its hull on Jan. 13 before turning over on its side.

Gabrielli said that relatives of a Hungarian woman have told Italian authorities that she had telephoned them from aboard the ship and that they haven't heard from her since the accident. He said it was possible that a woman's body pulled from the wreckage by divers on Saturday might be that of the unregistered passenger.

But one of Concordia's officers, who's recovering from a broken leg suffered during the evacuation, dismissed the allegation that such passengers were on the ship.

"Everyone is registered and photographed. Everything's electronic," the Italian news agency ANSA quoted Manrico Giampedroni as saying.

Authorities are trying to identify five corpses who are badly decomposed after spending a long time in the water.

Gabrielli said they have identified the other eight bodies: four French, an Italian, a Hungarian, a German and a Spanish national.

The missing include French passengers, an elderly American couple, a Peruvian crewwoman and an Indian crewman and an Italian father and his five-year-old daughter. Some of their relatives were briefed by rescuers Sunday, and also met with Pierluigi Foschi, the CEO of Costa Crociere, SpA ? the ship's operator ? who viewed the crippled cruise liner from a boat.

France's ambassador to Italy, Alain Le Roy, recounted Foschi's visit.

"He came to see the families, all families. He met the French family. He met the American family. I am sure he is meeting other families, mostly to express his compassion ... to say that Costa will do everything possible to find the people, to compensate families in any way."

The search had been halted for several hours early Sunday, after instrument readings indicated that the Concordia has shifted a bit on its precarious perch on a seabed just outside Giglio's port. A few meters (yards) away, the sea bottom drops off suddenly, by some 20-30 meters (65-100 feet), and if the Concordia should abruptly roll off its ledge, rescuers could be trapped inside.

When instrument data indicated the vessel had stabilized again, rescuers went back in, but only explored the above-water section and evacuation staging areas where survivors have indicated that people who did not make it into lifeboats during the chaotic evacuation could have remained.

Passengers were dining at a gala supper when the Concordia sailed close to Giglio and struck the reef, which is indicated on maritime and even tourist maps.

There are also fears that the Concordia's double-bottom fuel tanks could rupture in case of sudden shifting, spilling 2,200 metric tons (almost 500,000 million gallons) of heavy fuel into pristine sea around Giglio, which is part of a seven-island archipelago in some of the Mediterranean's most pristine waters and a prized fishing area.

But Gabrielli said pollutants found near the ship have been detergents and other substances, including chlorine, apparently from the wreck of the ship, which carried some 3,200 passengers and a crew of 1,000. Any fuel traces found were "compatible with what you find in a port," he said.

Ferries and cargo ships regularly call at Giglio's port.

Sophisticated oil-removal equipment has been standing by, waiting for the search-and-rescue operations to conclude before workers can start extracting the fuel in the tanks.

Giglio Mayor Sergio Orpelli told Sky TG24 TV that it was tentatively planned to begin fuel-removal operations on Monday but that the timetable ultimately depends on when the rescue efforts are concluded. "No hopes have been abandoned that someone might still be alive," Orpelli said.

Coast guard and fire rescue teams have said that the search will go on, as long as the weather holds and the Concordia stays stable.

The Italian captain, Francesco Schettino, is under house arrest as prosecutors investigate him for suspected manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning the ship while many were still aboard.

Operator Costa Crociere, a subsidiary of U.S.-based Carnival Cruise Lines, has said that Capt. Schettino had deviated without permission from the vessel's route in an apparent maneuver to sail close to the island and impress passengers.

Schettino, despite audiotapes of his defying Coast Guard orders to scramble back aboard, has denied he abandoned ship while hundreds of passengers were desperately trying to get off the capsizing vessel. He has said he coordinated the rescue from aboard a lifeboat and then from the shore.

Rome daily La Repubblica, citing what Schettino allegedly told prosecutors in Grosetto, Tuscany, when he was interrogated last week, quoted him as saying that Costa Crociere was aware of the "recurring practice" of nearing coastlines to salute those ashore. Schettino is quoted as saying that such a maneuver was planned by Costa executives before the ship left the port of Civitavecchia before dinner time on Jan. 13 to gain publicity for the company.

It was not immediately possible to confirm Schettino's allegations. Prosecutors cannot comment on details of a probe while it is still being conducted, and the office of Schettino's lawyer was closed Sunday.

Marco De Luca, a Costa Crociere lawyer, said the company is "an injured party" in the tragedy, which Costa executives have blamed on the captain's failure to follow the programmed route.

Giglio Mayor Orpelli said such "salutes" by passing cruise ships are rare.

Orpelli insisted that before the ill-fated Jan. 13 approach by the Concordia near the reef, the last previous time was on Aug. 14, when the island was celebrating a summer festival in the port, and that the maneuver was closely coordinated with island and navigational authorities. That summer salute was "carried out in perfect safety," the mayor told Sky, adding that he thanked the captain of that voyage "and told him to thank his crew."

Orpelli said that island officials were unaware of the Jan. 13 plan for such a salute.

RolePlayGateway is a site built by a couple roleplayers who wanted to give a little something back to the roleplay community. The site has no intention of earning any profit, and is paid for out of their own pockets.

If you appreciate what they do, feel free to donate your spare change to help feed them on the weekends. After selecting the amount you want to donate from the menu, you can continue by clicking on PayPal logo.
