Grid Has The Organization Of A Spreadsheet Without Those Pesky Number

I've definitely used Excel for some wordy stuff. It's not blasphemous exactly, but making charts full of apartment listings, square footage, amenity notes, broker e-mail addresses, and links to photos doesn't really make use of Excel's formula wielding, number crunching prowess. But a former Excel developer who knows this dirty little secret, built an app that's all blissful spreadsheet organization, no numbers.

Military investigators reportedly disqualify 60 troops as sexual assault counselors, recruiters or drill instructors

Military investigators reportedly have disqualified some 60 troops as sexual assault counselors, recruiters or drill instructors following a Defense Department-ordered review of their credentials and conduct.

According to USA Today, investigators found those removed from their posts had committed violations ranging from alcohol-related offenses to child abuse and sexual assault, although there was no confirmation from the Defense Department.

The records of at least 35,000 troops have been screened or are under review, the paper said, with the Army suspending 55 personnel and the Navy five.

The screenings were ordered in May by Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel following a jump in the number of sexual assaults in the armed forces.

"The leadership of this department has no higher priority than the safety and welfare of our men and women in uniform, and that includes ensuring they are free from the threat of sexual harassment and sexual assault,? Cathy Wilkinson, a Defense Department spokesman, said Friday.

?Together, everyone in this department at every level of command will continue to work together to establish an environment of dignity and respect, where sexual assault is not tolerated, condoned or ignored and where there is clear accountability placed on all leaders at every level."

Can 28 million Chinese be wrong? Here comes the e-bicycle

The pedal-assisted Moustache

The pedal-assisted Moustache

Half bike, half electric vehicle ? all cool personal transport, it?s the electric bicycle aka the e-bike and its appeal has been growing worldwide.

In the next seven years revenues from e-bikes are project to grow nearly 30 percent to $11 billion, according to Boulder-based Navigant Research, a market research and consulting group.

The Chinese market ? which is 92 percent of the world market ? is expected to reach 28 million e-bicycles in 2013, even as Chinese cities begin to consider bans on e-bicycles because of increasing accident and bicycle congestion, wrote Navigant analyst Dave Hurst.

While Asia and Europe are the two big e-bicycle markets, Navigant projects a 9.7 percent annual growth in North America, making it one of the fastest growing markets.

?There has definitely been some momentum,? said Dean Heyek-Franssen, co-founder of Pete?s Electric Bikes, which has stores in Boulder, Aspen and Frisco.

While Pete?s has customers ranging in age from 26 to 96, Heyek-Franssen said the ?sweet spot has been 40 plus.?

But the Navigant analysis says manufacturers in North America and Europe are reporting more interest from the under 40 crowd.

?The electric bike is designed to offer the health and environmental advantages of a bicycle with an electric motor,? Heyek-Franssen said. ?It helps the 65-year-old up a hill, but increasingly it is also seen as transportation alternative, a commuting option.? The speed by law has to be kept below 20 miles and hour.

That?s how e-bikes are used in Europe, where some even have VIN numbers, just like automobiles, Heyek-Franssen said.

The motor can be placed on the rear or front wheels or in the bracket with the pedals. The rear-wheel motor is most popular in Asia, Navigant said. But these bikes have throttles, which enables them to be driven like a scooter ? no pedaling involved.

?That?s why e-bicycles are banned from some bike paths, because the riders aren?t really biking,? Heyek-Franssen said.

Firefighter killed in Oregon is identified as crews battle blazes

By Teresa Carson

PORTLAND, Ore. - (Reuters) - A firefighter killed while battling a central Oregon wildfire has been identified as John Hammack of Madras, Oregon, officials said on Friday, as crews aided briefly by cooler, wetter weather grappled with blazes that have blackened more than 200 square miles (520 square km) of the Pacific Northwest.

Hammack died and another firefighter was injured when the top of a tree they were removing from the fire area outside the town of Sisters on Thursday broke off and crashed down on Hammack, who was 58, the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

Other officials said Hammack was 60.

The surviving firefighter, Norman Crawford, was treated at a hospital for shoulder injuries and has been released, according to local reports. Both men, contract tree fellers, were part of a firefighting team.

"This is a tough loss for Oregon," said Governor John Kitzhaber, who is set to visit a fire area in the southern part of the West Coast state on Saturday.

The current fire season has been particularly deadly in the U.S. West. Nineteen Arizona firefighters died in June after they became trapped by a wind-whipped inferno, and two people perished after being caught in a blaze in Colorado.

Thousands of firefighters fought to snuff out or at least contain blazes that had burned more than 40,000 acres of timber and range land across Oregon on Friday, 5,000 acres more than on Thursday, said Carol Connolly, a spokeswoman for the Northwest Interagency Coordination Center.

Nighttime and early morning lightning strikes sparked dozens of new fires, Connelly said, adding that emergency crews were helped by cooler temperatures and higher humidity, a streak likely to end next week with hotter weather and possibly more lightning-bearing storms.

In neighboring Washington state, more than 2,100 firefighters were making steady progress against a pair of blazes that have scorched more than 107,000 acres east of the Cascade Range.

About 45 structures remained at high risk from the so-called Colockum Tarps fire burning south of Wenatchee, said Mary Ellen Fitzgerald, a U.S. Forest Service official and a spokeswoman for firefighting efforts.

That fire, which has burned more than 80,000 acres in less than a week, has claimed three houses and five other buildings, including three outhouses. It was 30 percent contained as of Friday morning as firefighters were aided by light rain and fortuitous winds pushing smoke away from the containment line, Fitzgerald said.

Farther south, the so-called Mile Marker 28 fire, which has blackened 27,000 acres close to the Oregon border, is 75 percent contained, with residents of 69 homes forced to flee allowed to return as of Wednesday.

Israel's latest pick for central bank chief quits

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israel's newly designated central bank chief dropped his candidacy for the post Friday, following a similar withdrawal of the previous candidate.

In a statement, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said economist Professor Leonardo Leiderman informed the prime minister he was abandoning the prestigious job. No reason was given, but the announcement came a day after an Israeli television channel reported that Leiderman consulted with an astrologist regularly.

The Argentinian-born Leiderman has been a faculty member at Tel Aviv University for the past 20 years and is also a macroeconomic adviser to Israeli Bank Hapoalim. He has a doctorate in macroeconomics from the University of Chicago and has written seven books.

Netanyahu's previous choice for central bank chief had similarly impressive credentials for the job of Israel's governor of monetary policy. Jacob Frenkel withdrew his nomination over an old shoplifting case, though he was never charged or detained over the incident at a Hong Kong airport seven years ago.

Leiderman's withdrawal marks another blow to Netanyahu and his finance minister Yair Lapid as they seek to fill the void left by the internationally respected economist Stanley Fischer. Fischer stepped down in June after eight years on the job.
