Fix York County | Texting and driving: What?

OK, so texting while driving has been illegal in the great commonwealth of Pennsylvania for, what, a couple of weeks now. It?s been on the news. It?s been talked about on social media. People have texted one another about it.

So what did I see this morning?

Driving into work on Route 30, I saw a woman in a Toyota Something-or-other texting while sitting in traffic. When the light turned green, she was still texting, head bowed as if in prayer to the Verizon gods. She didn?t move when traffic moved. And then, when she noticed traffic started flowing, she lurched ahead.

One last time: This is illegal. And texting something that, I imagine, was to the effect that ?Hey, I?m stuck in traffic on 30,? doesn?t make you important. It makes you a hazard. Nothing you are doing is so important that you need to communicate right at that moment. You should do what everybody else does while stuck in traffic: Sing along to the Stones or pick your nose. So I?m told?

Just knock it off.

UPDATE: Strangely, according to state police, it is legal to text while stopped at a traffic light. The law only applies to moving vehicles and cars stopped at lights aren?t moving.

Yeah, that?s just fine. But what if you?re sitting there, texting, while everybody else is trying to move. It?s a stupid loophole.
